Enhance Your Building’s Energy Efficiency with Expanded Cork Insulation

Expanded cork insulation is a standout choice for reducing energy consumption and enhancing building performance for decades. It is renowned for its high insulation value (R-4 per inch), dimensional stability, and ability to minimize thermal bridging. By integrating expanded cork into your projects, you can ensure long-lasting, superior thermal resistance compared to many other insulation materials.

Superior Properties of Expanded Cork Insulation

Thermacork expanded cork insulation excels in environmental and thermal extremes, capable of handling temperatures ranging from -292°F to +248°F. It is hypoallergenic, free from domestic toxins, and exceptional at preventing mold through its moisture-permeable properties. In addition to its high insulative capacity, expanded cork also offers excellent sound isolation, is resistant to compression, and maintains its dimensions under various conditions. For insights on using expanded cork for soundproofing, visit our blog post, “When ‘No Sound’ Sounds Good: Using Thermacork and Other Materials To Manage Noise.”

Easy Application of Expanded Cork Insulation

Handling and installing expanded cork is straightforward and user-friendly. Unlike other insulative materials, expanded cork does not produce irritants or harmful particulates, making it a cleaner and safer choice for both residential and commercial construction sites. It's easily transported, applied, and can be affixed using standard tools like nail guns, simplifying the installation process.

Pacific Northwest ThermaCork Facade Performance Study

ThermaCork makes a great building facade and continuous insulation layer in one pass around the building exterior. It doesn't need paint or stain and will naturally weather in the elements just like the tree bark that it is. We've been curious just like everybody else how well it will really perform. Will it trap moisture in the wall cavity? Will it lose its insulation value if it soaks up water?

Well... we are going to find out. We've commissioned a study by the regions leading building science company RHD. Data loggers have been placed throughout the wall assemblies in a project in Olympia, WA. Data tracked will include both temperature and moisture levels from the inside to the outside of the walls. The study began in 2015 and will run for up to three years. In the end we will even get a useful WUFI model.
